Beacons in Russia

Beaconing is a complex of engineering and navigation equipment supplying measures.

Beacons are not only a part and parcel of navigation history, but also a peculiar picture of architecture and construction development.
Officially Russian Lighthouse Authority was founded on May 27 (June 8) 1807, when Russian Emperor Alexander I confirmed the “Lighthouse Provision”. Almost all the private lighthouses became state-owned. All the floating beacons were left at the disposal of Admiralty and the governors were obliged to take care of the lighthouses of their provinces.

At the end if the XIX century the system of visual aids to navigation of Baltic, White, Caspian, Black and Azov seas was created. It was up to the latest world standards.

Russian government supports the activity of Russian Hydrographic Office as it understands the necessity of the native navigation equipment development at top-level of a leading sea power and according to the requirements of native navigation.
